Van Burlesque Fest

The Vancouver International Burlesque Festival kicked off with a bang last night.

The show those girls put on at The Red Room was unquestionably the best burlesque show I've ever seen. I think I have a crush on one of the performers, Whiskey Rose, she was so much fun.

Between Worlds Burlesque, billed as Genre-Hopping / Era-Dropping / Mind-Popping, was EVERYTHING IT PROMISED. It was a comedy education, a sizzling phantasmagoria of stockings, high heels, and mixed media entertainment. Every girl had a completely different show, highlights of which include a Marlene Deitrich as done by Liza Minelli, a mad punk chicken beheading, a hip-to-the-hop hardcore booty-dancing water nymph, Tristan as a bioengineered Alien Queen, and, my personal favourite, Sexy Little Red and the Raunchy Fun Wolf. Just... wow.

Lucky for everyone who missed it, there's way more coming, so hold onto your tiny feathered hats, and run on down to check out some of the shows!

Tonight, Friday, April 25th, it's...

I love burlesque; a friend of mine is a burlesque performer here and I've gone out to see quite a few. I do wonder, though, if the approach to burlesque, at a more institutional level, is different from region to region? After all, when so much of the show is about not titillation but shock/gee-whiz value, different areas and their different progressive/non-progressive attitudes must come into play. New York is a liberal city (for the states) but nowhere near Vancouver or any of the west coast hubs; I wonder if the stage plays differently for their respective crowds?

I generally don't have as much fun at them as I expect to, but this was exemplary. it seems only the best of the best are out for this festival.

I was talking about just that last night with one of the girls, actually, who was telling me that she worked a little differently when she was in Chicago. One of the workshops touches on it too, "This class explores burlesque dance techniques such as the bump & grind, shimmy & shake, and their stylistic variations as executed by performers from different milleux and regions of the country, such as New York, New Orleans, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Seattle.", so it's obviously something that traveling performers understand, though I have no idea if a group has ever gotten together to discuss it.

Couldn't tell you. Tomorrow night I'm hosting the door at something called the Banquet of Broads.
