introduction innoculation

Jhayne at the Folk Fest, picture by Jon.
Dee Harding says: "Do you know, I wouldn't be surprised if you turned out to be the internet version of Toxoplasma gondii. I wasn't saying that you had it, more that you were easily transmitable, impossible to eradicate, and with a string of poorly understood psychological side effects."

And he's a doctor, so he should know.

Twice a year I do a shout out, I ask that everyone speaks up, even if they otherwise stay silent. Like a good house party, it's always fascinating to see who turns up.

So, please, tell me your names, post your picture, introduce yourself, tell me why you're here, how you found me, and what inspires you.

I want to know who's on the other end of my screen, what fun and fantastic people are out there, waiting to be met. Even if I know you, introduce yourself to others, and tell me what you've done lately. Explain a piece of your world with something beautiful, make something new, or dig up the grave of an old favourite. Anecdotes are welcome, as are pictures, job descriptions, inspiring links, stimulations, titillations, and your pretty hidden treasures. The name of the game is networking, so share what you want everyone else to know.

You are artists and scientists, nihilists and dreamers, comic book illustrators, archeologists, hackers, retail managers, photographers, teachers, librarians, hair dressers, and submarine captains. You are novelists, derby girls, musicians, and accountants. Optimists, pragmatists, magicians and politicians, fencers, film addicts, home owners and homeless. You are lighting designers, poets, animators, and lawyers. You are glorious, fabulous, interesting creatures, rich in colour, thick with story - and I want to hear from you all.

For those new, my name's Jhayne. I'm a writer and photographer currently trapped in Vancouver, Canada. I live on the internet, work for a media company, and occasionally get paid to set off fireworks. I'm also an amateur taxidermist/cryptozoologist, play french horn and the saw, and edit other people's novels. Last year I started a global initiative to save a local turn-of-last-century theater and turn it into a new multimedia venue called Heart of the World. It fell down, went boom, but oh well. Time to try something else, I guess. Welcome to my journal, a mixture of wonder, pointlessness, isolation, and community where I talk about life, love, art, technology, and try not to hate the world.

Now it's your turn. Spill.

Erm... Heather, a not-quite sure what-she-is stuck in a dead-end job at an internet medical publisher that's steadily driving me insane. Sometimes I write fanfiction, and i used to take photos and create fan-type websites. Drifting a lot. trying to find another job and figure out what it is I want to do (which is a bit problematic due to being stuck in a rut). Sometimes I go to conventions.

Hi Jhayne dear

Jhayne, I met you for the first time *twice*. This is because you kept showing up to going away parties for people I knew -- who I knew to be cool -- and then found myself talking with you twice as the next coolest person at the party (beyond the person leaving). After the second time I decided I needed to be someone who actually knew you. And now a couple years later -- you are sitting across the desk from me toiling away at *that media company*.

Well Jhayne, you know who I am (and you know who Sarah is) but I will for this blog tell everyone else who I am. I am Keith. My online ID for many places is Airchinapilot and lately that is mostly on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/airchinapilot/). Yes, I am one of those notorious photographers. My polished shingle is on http://www.keithloh.com. Some of those photographs are of you dearie (though I admire that one of yours in this blog post a lot too).

Other interesting tidbits about me: I once worked for William Gibson teaching his son Macromedia Director. I am a trained technical writer. I'm a two-time the Praxis Center for Screenwriting Fellow (http://www.praxisfilm.com). Besides my day job I also earn money doing web things and taking photo commissions. I moved from the west side to the east side. And now I am signing off to go to a baseball game. ttul

How is it we all know that song? I think I've only been to one baseball game in my life, and I was probably around thirteen.

I really need to shiny up my web-page. Let some updates out into the public. All that jazz.

Hi Jhayne!

I'm Angela. I'm a writer, photographer, painter and once again filmmaker. I also try not to hate the world, with varying success on optional odd days.

You can see my work here: http://angelahunt.30art.com and on my flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/angelanhunt

I occasionally make costumes. Because I like to lose my mind.

Right now, I'm temping at my alter ego job as an admin. It pays the bills.

I'm actively looking for models in Los Angeles right now. I need to build some fashion into my portfolio and I need new faces and bodies that are willing to contort for me for food and tea and prints. If you are interested or know someone who is, ping me at angela.n.hunt at gmail dot com.

Oh, and I think you're awesome. The Heart of the World will live again. I just know it.

Duncan Shea
Tue, Jul. 22nd, 2008 11:37 pm (UTC)
(Rocket J. Squirrel voice) Again?

I'm Duncan Shea, and I'm of the notion I'll be repeating myself. Writer, doodler, occasional actor, adequate photographer. See the icon for my picture (though my hair is, er, even shorter now. I miss my long hair). It was seeing the pictures of you with the multicolored woolen hair that got me (and your shoulders. *sigh*). I participated in National Novel Writing Month last November and won, somehow. The novel in question, called Terminal Show, is about a battle of the bands, and The Devil is a major character, and it's told from the point of view of a writer for a music magazine. Of course, there's another novel I've been trying to work on for years now... it's all in my head but for some odd reason(s) I'm not letting it out to take up space on the hard drive (save for incomplete first drafts). Its working title is Scared of Girls, and I don't know what more I could say about it, other than I sometimes refer to it as "my apology to women everywhere for being a guy."
In the meantime, I'm doodling rough layouts and writing dialogue for a comic project that, like everything else in the hive of my head, has been long-percolating and occasionally mutating... always it's been an excuse to draw monsters and pretty girls... now it's looking to be a story about a filmmaker (the pretty girl) who stumbles upon one of Hollywood's darker, deeper secrets (monsters).
I'm trying my hand at animation (bought some software) and puppetry (downloaded a pattern). I found a recipe for marshmallows I'm hoping to try. Years ago a friend of mine and I worked on a Beowulf screenplay, which was tricky because she lived in South Carolina and I live in Virginia, and this was before either of us had email... we mailed floppy disks back and forth. I was an extra in a movie about a comet. I appeared on local late night live TV. After a series of odd jobs (clerical stuff, substitute teacher) intermingled with periods of no jobs at all, I currently work for a car dealership (like my sister and her boyfriend. My boss is my sister's boyfriend's father) which is ironic because I hate to drive and like cars even less. But at least I'm working and being paid for it. I like going to Renaissance Festivals and horror conventions. I used to be in Drama in my college days, and whenever I see a play at my alma mater, I feel a happiness mingled with a pang of longing for the old sense of fellowship, even though I didn't (and still don't) mingle as well as I could. Of course, funnily enough, thanks to Facebook, I'm reconnecting with people from Drama and elsewhen in my life. Never mind that my former Drama teacher and I go to the same church. (www.bruu.org) I could be on first-name basis with him, but I still call him "Doctor Trumbull." I'm still on DeviantArt as serizawa3000, though I haven't put up much new stuff for a while now.

I found this: http://www.collintheatrecenter.com/PastShows/2006/RockyHorror/Photos.htm

This theater did a production of The Rocky Horror Show with puppets. I like the puppets, and I also like that because its the original play, they're not adhering to the look of the film.

I think you're neat. Some bit of me wishes one of us lived closer by so we'd have an excuse to visit a gelateria sometime. :)

Jhaynes Mum

I have the undoubted right to say I have known Jhayne longer than anyone else.

My current project is writing and producing a multi-media book called "The Live More Lightly Songbook and Workshop Guide" -- more on my blog www.livemorelightly.com

I plan to do a book tour on my motorcycle and make a video. Right now I am working on mounting a camera on my motorcycle, then on a ride across Canada I will capture as much as I can. Although I am trained as a musician, I have an interest in many types of media and computers that help me create.

Jhayne's readers are probably as interesting as her friends. I am always happy to meet you.

hi - a little nonsense to enjoy

I’m consumed by coarse conversations that stop me from thinking about limits - I like being called on to switch direction; it tunes my head more precisely then finely sharpened edges, or an ex, wearing a tux and pretending to be a sledgehammer - if it rings bells, and doesn’t blame me for reading books about feeling, then I’ll gladly collide with the spaces that fill my holes - I exist in matter that’s as large as entire universes, but only in ones that don’t seem to know it - some of my friends are to busy crashing on the sound of stone floors, to smack me upside the skull - some stop chattering, and watch me like I'm a slow motion event, which they re-run endlessly for friends of theirs, and their phones.

Hey there - I stumbled upon you via Kathy Kachelries, when she shone a light on your global initiative to save a local turn-of-last-century theater and turn it into a new multimedia venue called Heart of the World. You introduced us to Duncan, or vice-versa, and the world has become a better place.

Staff Writer and Chief Mechanic on Record for 365tomorrows. I also own a software development company and consultancy based outside Toronto, Align Software Inc., where we build web applications and dabble with fun things like iPhone development, and spend most of our time knee deep in WebObjects. I play the piano far less than I should, and should be far better than I am. My body's need for sleep frustrates me, as there are 6 or so hours each day that I could better use creating something. I'm want to take on large construction projects (I've just built a 17x30 pool from a kit and am now surrounding it with a deck). I'm happiest when I'm physically exhausted, which lately has been by playing 90 minute ball hockey games in an oven of an arena. I can drink far more than is healthy but drink much less than I'd like to, for the sad reason that drinking now makes it much harder to think later, and I'm always planning on thinking later.

I've got very few pictures of me it seems, so this will have to do - spring of this year after having finished roofing a friends cottage.

I'm a musician, programmer, parent & alternative transportation activist. I tend to know far too many facts about far too many topics, some of which are accurate. Sometimes I design & sell logic puzzles, though not so much of late: instead I've been playing at a variety of local open mics, and have a solo gig coming up on BC Day.

Since the respective quality of my piano playing and singing seem to obey the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, I really need to find a singer one of these days. And a percussionist.
